Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the value of my gold?
Convert the weight to troy ounces, multiply by the gold’s purity (e.g. 0.5833 for 14K), then multiply by the current spot price per troy ounce. The result is the “melt” value — the worth of the pure gold content. Our calculator does all three steps automatically and also estimates a realistic scrap offer.
What is the difference between melt value and what a buyer pays?
Melt value is the intrinsic worth of the pure metal. Scrap buyers and pawn shops need a margin to cover refining and profit, so they typically pay 70–90% of melt depending on quantity and purity. Branded jewellery, designer pieces and collectible coins can sell for more than melt.
What does karat mean for gold value?
Karat measures purity out of 24. Pure gold is 24K (99.9%). 18K is 75% gold, 14K is about 58.3%, and 10K is about 41.7%. The rest is alloy metals. The higher the karat, the more pure gold per gram, so the higher the value for the same weight.
Is the spot price live?
The calculator attempts to load the current live spot price for gold and silver automatically. If the live quote is unavailable, it falls back to a recent default — and the spot price field is always editable, so you can paste in the exact figure from your preferred source.
Can I value sterling silver and junk silver too?
Yes. Switch the metal to silver and choose your fineness — fine silver (.999), sterling (.925) or US 90% “junk” silver coins. The calculator applies the right purity and uses the live silver spot price.
